Ebook About
By the award-winning author of Dog Company: a historic account of a Revolutionary War unit’s “tactical acumen and human drama . . . combat writing at its best” (The Wall Street Journal).   In August 1776, little over a month after the Continental Congress had formally declared independence from Britain, the revolution was on the verge of a disastrous end. General George Washington found his troops outmanned and outmaneuvered at the Battle of Brooklyn. But thanks to a series of desperate charges by a single heroic regiment, famously known as the “Immortal 400,” Washington was able to evacuate his men and the nascent Continental Army lived to fight another day.   In Washington’s Immortals, award-winning military historian Patrick K. O’Donnell brings to life the forgotten story of these remarkable men. Comprised of rich merchants, tradesmen, and free blacks, they fought not just in Brooklyn, but in key battles including Trenton, Princeton, Camden, Cowpens, Guilford Courthouse, and Yorktown, where their heroism changed the course of the war.   Drawing on extensive original sources, from letters to diaries to pension applications, O’Donnell pieces together the stories of these brave men—their friendships, loves, defeats, and triumphs. He explores their tactics, their struggles with hostile loyalists and shortages of clothing and food, their development into an elite unit, and their dogged opponents, including British General Lord Cornwallis.   Through the prism of this one unit, O’Donnell tells the larger story of the Revolutionary War.   “Well-written, and superbly researched . . . A must-read for Revolutionary War and Maryland history buffs alike.” —Bill Hughes, Baltimore Post-Examiner

Book Washington's Immortals: The Untold Story of an Elite Regiment Who Changed the Course of the Revolution Review :

First, I would like to comment on a couple of negative reviews that I think are completely unwarranted. There are many arm chair students who have done in depth study on the American Revolution and other great wars. I think many of the criticisms from these individuals were nit picking and over bearing. Most readers learn about the Revolution in grade school or in required college courses and don't have the depth of knowledge of historical hobbyists who can often be unnecessarily arrogant. In fact, the average young American knows virtually nothing about the details of our founding. This book stands tall for its purpose which is to relate how the Maryland Immortals exercised great bravery and made selfless sacrifices to save Washington's army. As one who was born and raised in Maryland, I was not familiar with the detail in this account. Also, as a black American, I commend Mr. O'Donnell for highlighting the role of black soldiers (as a corollary, I mildly criticize him for using the politically correct term "African American" which emanates from the modern day civil rights establishment) during the Revolution. In fact, Washington's army was very racially integrated at the time. The research was impressive, and I found the book educational, interesting and a true page turner. The further our country is removed from the Revolution, the more we forget what a miracle it was that a rag tag army defeated the most powerful military machine in the world at its time. It is also important to understand how our fledgling colonies were torn apart emotionally, politically, and physically by this war. The book relates how these early Americans gave up so much to give us the gift of freedom that we now, too often, take for granted. Of utmost importance, he told the story from the warrior's viewpoint. I appreciate the 5 years that Mr. O'Donnell spent researching and writing this account. In my opinion, it was work well done, and I will be recommending it to others.
With so many glowing reviews, I felt compelled to add mine. I am reading the book for the second time. Nothing has changed my initial opinion. The book is a cursory review of all principle engagements involving the 1st and 2nd Maryland Regiments (+ the 1st Delaware). The author jumps from battle to battle with few connections. Action is described then completed with a quote or limited addition as to specific actions of the officers from "the Immortals." Not enough was written by the participants (Smallwood, Gist, other officers) to really expand beyond previously written books. Because of the high turnover of privates, corporals, and NCOs, the connection to the title is really through the commanding officers. I have found that specific books about the separate engagements (Schecter's The Battle for New York, McGuire's The Philadelphia Campaign, etc) provide greater depth and a superior overview of the Immortals. If you have an understanding of the campaigns then find an alternative. If you are seeking an introductory read then this book suffices. Just my opinion.
