This wintry dogsled expedition consists of leaders and abused women who have left their partners within the last six months - oh, and one woman is writing her dissertation on the long-term impact of fear on women in abusive relationships. They are in the area around Grafton Notch State Park in the Mahoosuc Mountains of Maine.Jamie Flint and her son and crew are called in with their K-9 partners when the 10 women mysteriously disappear from their camp. A huge group of trained people and dogs look for the women in wintry conditions, finding that someone has fired into the camp, wounding two of the women.I enjoyed this second story in the Flint K-9 Search and Rescue series, after THE DARKEST THREAD. I did feel (like I did in the first book) that the author tried to add too many elements to the story. There was a lot of repetition and it took me a while to read through the wordy story. But I still liked the separate elements - Jamie herself; her son Bear; Ren, the young Nigerian refugee; the many dogs. And I liked the setting in the wild Mahoosuc Mountains.Oh, and the supernatural elements from the first story continue in this one. Jen Blood gives a reader the thrills, concerns for her characters and an interesting plot. There is a hint of romance and lots of intriguing facts about handling and caring for search and rescue dogs. Jen’s main characters always include one or more dogs with their own backstories. I am hooked on her books as easy, fun reads. I tire of series books easily as they often seem either repetitive or the writing stale, but Jen’s use of characters who play greater or supportive roles throughout her series are fresh and inviting. I especially appreciate that her first series was a pentology, but that continuity was carried through with the Flint Rescue characters. I am looking forward to the next steps in Jamie’s relationship with Jack and Phantom and foresee a spin-off for Bear and Ren.
